2011 - As Escolhas do Puto

2011: o ano da crise financeira internacional, do tsunami no Japão, das inundações no Brasil, das revoltas no Mundo Árabe, dos casamentos reais, dos desaparecimentos de Amy Winehouse, Gil Scott-Heron, Trish Keenan, John Barry, Cesária Évora, Poly Styrene, do divórcio de Kim Gordon e Thurston Moore, do fim dos R.E.M., LCD Soundsystem, The White Stripes, Grinderman e The Stills, do Grammy dos Arcade Fire, da marca dos 7 mil milhões de humanos, do último vôo do vai-vem espacial, da ocupação de Wall Street e de tantos outros acontecimentos. Foi ano de muitos discos, de bons filmes e várias sessões de bota-disquismo, onde a partilha, a amizade e a boa disposição imperam. 2011 também me fica marcado pelo primeiro concerto dos Screaming Jelly Babies, do iníco da minha colaboração com o jornal Voz de Santa Eulália e da rubrica "Uma música por dia", aqui no blog.

Metronomy - The English Riviera (2011)

Joseph Mount, um rapaz inglês musicalmente prodigioso que se iniciou como baterista, resolveu criar algo paralelo às bandas para o qual contribuía com o ritmo. Assim nasceu Metronomy, que de projecto a solo foi evoluindo para o formato banda, sendo actualmente um quarteto. Após 2 álbuns onde a pop se revestia de texturas electrónicas e experimentações estéticas, os esforços no terceiro disco foram orientados para a composição. Daí resultou um conjunto de canções recheadas de classe, linhas melódicas irresistíveis e ritmos contagiantes. A produção, a cargo de Mount, é depuradíssima, permitindo realçar todos os componentes instrumentais e harmonias vocais presentes. Não desprezando a aparente aleatoriedade dos sons do disco anterior (“Nights Out”, de 2008), essa errância é contida e é-lhe acrescentada requinte e complexidade, seja sob a capa de soft rock, sobre toadas jazz ou envolvida em linhas sintéticas. O resultado soa quase minimal e compartimentado, porém fluido, colorido e orgânico. Ouça-se “The Look”, um dos singles mais viciantes do ano, o dueto “Everything Goes My Way”, o crescendo de “Trouble”, o apelo de “The Bay” ou o tropicalismo de “Some Written” para confirmar que a pop continua de boa saúde. Tive oportunidade de vê-los ao vivo na última edição do Festival de Paredes de Coura, onde os temas ganham uma energia extra, um complemento visual cativante e um ambiente de festa.
